Equipment & Capabilities

The Central New Hampshire Hazardous Materials Response Team has the knowledge and equipment to identify and control nearly all hazardous materials incidents. One of the most difficult aspects of hazardous materials incident stabilization is accurately identifying the products involved. For this purpose, the Team is equipped with the latest and most technically advanced metering, monitoring, and detection equipment, including:

  • Multi-Gas Meters
  • Photo Ionization Detector
  • Columetric Detection Tubes
  • Weapons of Mass Destruction Detection Kits (Nerve and Blister Agents)
  • CAM Plus Mutli-Agent Detector
  • Radiological Monitors
  • Extensive Resource Library
  • Computer Modeling/Dispersion Programs

Most of the Team's responses are for petroleum product spills, such as gasoline or home heating oil. For these incidents, the Team maintains a large stock of:

  • Absorbent Booms and Pads
  • Leak Plug and Patch Kits
  • Drilling and Tapping Kits for Product Removal
  • Transfer Pumps
  • Over Pack Drums
  • Drain Covers

For less common, but equally as important responses, the Team is equipped with:

  • Level A through D Personal Protective Equipment
  • Self Contained Breathing Apparatus
  • Complete Decontamination equipment
  • Cold/warm weather mass decontamination trailer
  • Grounding/Bonding equipment
  • Chlorine Leak Control Kits
  • Propane Leak Control Kits
  • Mercury Spill Kits
  • Acid Spill Kits
  • Chemical Booms and Pads
  • Many other pieces of specialized equipment

Vehicles & Apparatus

The Central New Hampshire Hazardous Materials Response Team utilizes three vehicles and one trailer for specific purposes. Below is a description of each unit:

66U166U1

66U1 Interior66U1 is a 1979 GMC Kurbmaster/Grumman step van powered by a General Motors gasoline engine and automatic transmission. The van is set up for hazardous materials investigations and carries a reference library; toxicity, chemical, radiological, and weapons of mass destruction detection equipment; communications equipment; personal protective clothing and hazardous environment entry suits; self contained breathing apparatus; decontamination equipment; and a limited supply of leak plug and patch kits. This vehicle, which replaced a similar step van, was donated to the Team by the Northwood Fire Department. It was fit-up for use by Team members and placed in service in 2002. The Team is actively investigating possibilities to replace this vehicle.

66U266U2

66U2 Interior66U2 is a 1991 International/Thomas former school bus powered by an International diesel engine and five-speed automatic transmission. The bus is set-up as a Command Center and personnel rehabilitation unit for long-term incidents. The truck is equipped with communications and research equipment, a refrigerator and microwave, and a chemical toilet. The bus was anonymously donated to the team by a person who wanted to ensure it would be put to good use. It was fit-up for use by Team members and placed in service in 2003.

66U366U3

66U3 Equipment Display66U3 is a 1987 International S1900 cab and chassis with a 1979 Fontaine roll-up body. It is powered by an International DT-466 diesel motor and a manual transmission with a split rear end. The truck contains an extensive amount of response materials, including: entry suits, decontamination equipment, spill control equipment, petroleum absorbent materials, leak plug and patch kits, etc. The truck was donated to the Team by the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Belmont, NH. It was fit up by Team members and placed in service in 1999.

Decontamination TrailerDecontamination Trailer

The Decontamination Trailer is a complete self contained warm/cold weather mass decontamination unit. This trailer is equipped with an on-board water heater and all of the other equipment that is required for decontamination operations. It is capable of decontaminating up to 300 people per hour in the event of a hazardous materials release. This trailer is one of nine identical units which are stationed in strategic locations throughout New Hampshire. It was acquired through a homeland security grant, with its primary mission to be civilian mass decontamination, but it also serves a dual purpose to conduct tactical decontamination of Team personnel after a hazardous environment entry. The trailer was placed in service in 2003.
